Sermorelin for weight loss: what the trials actually show

Does sermorelin cause weight loss? The trials found no change in weight or fat. What programs claim, what FDA approves for fat, and cost. Checked 2 Nov 2026.

By Julian Caraulani · Updated November 2, 2026

Sermorelin is not a weight loss drug, and the adult trials we found showed no change in body weight or fat. It is compounded, not FDA-approved, and programs charge from $94 a month at Idun Rx. For weight loss, the evidence sits with approved GLP-1 drugs, not sermorelin (Vittone 1997, PubMed 9005976).

Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. Sermorelin is not one of the six peptides under the interim HHS policy; see the peptide legal status tracker.

What the trials measured

Two small trials in older adults measured weight and body composition.

In 11 healthy, non-obese men aged 64 to 76, six weeks of nightly sermorelin "did not change weight, body mass index, waist to hip ratio, DEXA measures of muscle and fat, muscle histology, glucose, insulin, or GH responses to OGTT, or lipids" (Vittone 1997, read 2 Nov 2026).

A placebo-controlled trial of 19 adults aged 55 to 71 used a modified sermorelin analog for 16 weeks. It reported that "blood pressure and body weight were unaffected," with increased lean body mass "in men only" and "no other changes in body composition" (Khorram 1997, PubMed 9141536, read 2 Nov 2026). That is a different molecule, so it is close evidence rather than direct.

Neither trial enrolled people with obesity or tested sermorelin as a weight loss treatment. Absence of evidence is not proof of no effect, but no trial we found shows fat loss.

What programs say

Program What its page says (read 2 Nov 2026)
System Labs "The scale often doesn't move much because fat and lean mass may be shifting at the same time." "Body composition changes may start around month 3." (systemlabs.com)
Hone Health "When included as part of a comprehensive weight loss plan, sermorelin can help improve body composition, break down stored fat, and avoid the loss of muscle mass." (honehealth.com)

Both frame sermorelin as a body composition aid, not a stand-alone way to lose weight. We found no published trial behind the fat claims. Judge them against the two studies above.

What FDA has approved for fat

The one growth hormone releasing hormone analog with an approved fat indication is tesamorelin. Its label limits that to "reduction of excess abdominal fat in HIV-infected adult patients with lipodystrophy" and says it "is not indicated for weight loss management as it has a weight neutral effect." We compare the two in sermorelin vs tesamorelin. If a related drug approved for fat is weight neutral, a compounded drug with no fat indication should not be assumed to do better.

If your goal is weight loss

Medicines with weight loss evidence are the approved GLP-1 drugs, such as semaglutide. Our retatrutide vs semaglutide guide covers the trial record. A clinician can tell you whether any drug fits your health, and whether sermorelin adds anything alongside it. MadeMed's FAQ addresses people on GLP-1 drugs, but we found no trial of sermorelin combined with them.

Cost and access

The cheapest tracked sermorelin plan is Idun Rx at $94 a month (Sermorelin, 12 months, 12-month plan, listed per month (upfront billing not stated)). Compare programs on the sermorelin price page and in the cost guide. Your prescriber sets the form and amount; we do not publish doses. Side effects are in sermorelin side effects, and the wider evidence in sermorelin benefits.

FAQ

Does sermorelin help with weight loss?

Not in the trials we found. In older men, six weeks of sermorelin did not change weight, BMI or DEXA measures of fat. A placebo-controlled analog trial also found body weight unaffected. No trial tests sermorelin for weight loss in people with obesity.

Can sermorelin burn fat?

No human trial we found shows it. Programs say it may improve body composition over months, but the DEXA scans in the Vittone trial showed no change in fat. Tesamorelin, an approved relative, is limited to HIV lipodystrophy and is labeled weight neutral.

Is sermorelin FDA-approved for weight loss?

No. Sermorelin has no FDA-approved product today, and no approval for weight loss or fat reduction. Pharmacies can compound it on a prescription, but compounded sermorelin is not an FDA-approved drug and has not been reviewed for this use.

Will I lose weight on sermorelin?

Do not expect it. One program says the scale often does not move much while fat and lean mass shift. Trials found no change in weight. If weight is your goal, ask a clinician about approved options with trial evidence.

Is sermorelin better than semaglutide for weight loss?

No trial compares them. Semaglutide has an approved weight management label and large trials; sermorelin has neither. They act on different pathways, so a clinician should decide whether either fits your situation.

How much does sermorelin cost per month?

Tracked programs start at $94 a month at Idun Rx, and prices vary by plan and what is included. Compare current plans on our sermorelin price page before choosing.

Bottom line

Sermorelin has not been shown to cause weight or fat loss in adults. To price it anyway, use the cost page, or compare approved and compounded options on our best peptide programs.
