Sermorelin benefits: what the evidence actually shows

Sermorelin benefits claimed by programs versus what three small adult trials found: hormone levels, strength, skin, sleep, body fat, and where the evidence is thin.

By Julian Caraulani · Updated October 31, 2026

The best-supported sermorelin benefit is a rise in growth hormone and IGF-I in older adults. Body fat, muscle and sleep benefits are claimed by programs but were small or absent in the trials that measured them (Vittone 1997, PubMed 9005976). Sermorelin is compounded, not FDA-approved, and programs start at $94 a month; see every sermorelin price.

Below: what sermorelin does, what each study found, what programs promise, and how to judge a claim.

What sermorelin does

Sermorelin is a synthetic copy of the first 29 amino acids of growth hormone releasing hormone. A drug review describes it as able to "specifically stimulate growth hormone secretion from the anterior pituitary" (Prakash and Goa, PubMed 18031173). It asks your pituitary to release its own growth hormone rather than supplying it. Any benefit therefore starts with a hormone change, and the question is whether that change leads to things you can feel or measure.

Benefits the adult trials measured

All three adult studies we found are small. The largest had 19 people and the longest ran 16 weeks.

Benefit What the trials found Source
Higher growth hormone and IGF-I Reported in older men and in older adults over 12 weeks, then drifting back by week 16 Corpas 1992, Khorram 1997
Strength and endurance 2 of 6 strength measures and one endurance test improved in 11 men over 6 weeks Vittone 1997
Skin thickness Rose in both sexes, measured on the hand and forearm with calipers, using an analog Khorram 1997
Lean mass, well-being, libido Rose in men only, with the analog Khorram 1997
Body weight, fat and muscle on scans No change Vittone 1997
Sleep quality No change Khorram 1997

The Corpas team concluded that "short term sc administration of GHRH to healthy old men reverses age-related decreases in GH and IGF-I" (Corpas 1992, PubMed 1379256). That is a hormone result from a 14-day trial, not proof of a feel-better or look-better effect.

The Vittone team found sermorelin "did not change weight, body mass index, waist to hip ratio, DEXA measures of muscle and fat" (Vittone 1997). Khorram reported that "sleep quality was unaffected in both genders" (Khorram 1997), and that trial used a modified analog, so it is close evidence rather than direct. Our before and after guide covers the timelines in more detail.

Benefits programs promise

Programs describe benefits in marketing language. These are provider statements, not trial results:

Program What it says Source
System Labs "Energy and recovery often follow in weeks 3 to 8." "Body composition changes may start around month 3." systemlabs.com
MadeMed "Many patients notice initial improvements like deeper, more restful sleep and increased energy within 2-4 weeks." mademed.com
Hone Health "Effects are usually felt in 2 to 6 months." honehealth.com
Luvo Health "Individual results vary and depend on baseline hormone levels and clinical oversight." luvohealth.com

Sleep and energy claims are the most common, yet the one trial that tested sleep found no change. None of these timelines comes from a controlled trial of the program's own product.

Benefits we found no human evidence for

We found no human study showing that sermorelin improves wrinkles, facial appearance, libido in women, mood or longevity. Those appear in marketing but not in the trials above. For fat loss specifically, see the planned guide on sermorelin and weight; for now, the Vittone scans showed no change in fat.

Where the evidence is strongest

The strongest evidence is in children. Sermorelin was an approved product for children with growth hormone deficiency before the brand, Geref, was withdrawn, and FDA found the withdrawal was "not withdrawn from sale for reasons of safety or effectiveness" (Federal Register, March 4, 2013). Adults buying a compounded product are using it off that history, which is indirect evidence. It is not on FDA's category 2 list, and licensed pharmacies compound it on a prescription. See the FDA status guide.

How to judge a benefit claim

  • Ask whether the claim comes from a trial, and how many people it had.
  • Ask for an IGF-I lab before and after; it is the marker the trials used.
  • Check whether the program bundles other medicines, which muddies what caused a change.
  • Weigh the benefits against the known effects in our side effects guide.

Your prescriber sets the form and amount; we do not publish doses. The sermorelin overview and cost guide cover what programs include.

FAQ

What are the benefits of sermorelin?

The best-documented benefit is a rise in growth hormone and IGF-I in older adults. Small trials also reported some strength gains, thicker skin on the hand and forearm, and in men higher lean mass and well-being with an analog. Body fat, muscle on scans and sleep quality did not change in the trials that measured them.

Does sermorelin really work?

It works at the hormone level: trials show higher growth hormone and IGF-I. Whether that produces visible or lasting changes is less clear, because the adult trials had 19 or fewer people, ran 16 weeks at most, and found no change in weight or scanned fat and muscle in the one that measured them.

What are the benefits of sermorelin for men over 50?

The trials enrolled men and women aged roughly 55 to 76. In men, they reported higher hormone levels, some strength measures improving, and with an analog higher lean mass, well-being and libido. Results were small and short term, so men should ask a prescriber about labs and realistic expectations.

Does sermorelin help with sleep and energy?

Programs say it does, with timelines of weeks to months. The only trial that tested sleep, Khorram 1997, reported sleep quality was unaffected over 16 weeks, using an analog. Energy was not a measured outcome in the trials we found, so those claims rest on provider statements.

Are there proven anti-aging benefits of sermorelin?

No. Trials show it reverses age-related drops in hormone levels over short periods. We found no study showing it extends life, slows aging or improves wrinkles. Skin thickness rose in one trial, measured on the hand and forearm, not the face.

Is sermorelin worth the cost?

That depends on what you want from it and what the monthly price includes. Compare plans, labs and follow-up on the price table before committing, and stop if your prescriber's agreed markers have not moved.
