Sermorelin vs ipamorelin: status, evidence and access compared
Sermorelin vs ipamorelin: two growth hormone peptides with different receptors, evidence and legal footing. FDA status and trial record, checked 1 Nov 2026.
By Julian Caraulani · Updated November 1, 2026
Sermorelin can be compounded on a prescription, from $94 a month at Idun Rx. Ipamorelin has no approved product and no federal compounding route we can find: FDA lists it in Category 2 for 503B outsourcing facilities (FDA, read 1 Nov 2026). We track no licensed program that prices it.
Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. Neither peptide is among the six covered by the interim HHS policy; see our peptide legal status tracker.

The difference in how they work
The 1998 paper that introduced ipamorelin described it as a pentapeptide that "stimulates GH release via a GHRP-like receptor" rather than the growth hormone releasing hormone receptor (Raun 1998, PubMed 9849822). Sermorelin works on the other pathway. A drug review found sermorelin can "specifically stimulate growth hormone secretion from the anterior pituitary" (Prakash and Goa, PubMed 18031173). Both end in a pulse of growth hormone, which is why they get compared. Marketing claims that one is "gentler" or "stronger" are not backed by head-to-head human trials; we found none.

What the human evidence shows
Ipamorelin's clinical record is thin. A study in healthy male volunteers characterized how the body handles it and how growth hormone responded, and concluded the model "provides a useful characterization of ipamorelin disposition and GH responses" (Gobburu 1999, PubMed 10496658). That is pharmacology, not proof of any benefit.
The one outcome trial we found was a phase 2 study in 117 adults after bowel surgery, testing ipamorelin for postoperative ileus. It was "well tolerated" but there were "no significant differences between ipamorelin and placebo in the key and secondary efficacy analyses" (Beck 2014, PubMed 25331030). It does not test anti-aging, body composition or muscle.
Sermorelin's adult record is also small. In 11 men aged 64 to 76, strength measures partly improved but body fat on scans did not change (Vittone 1997, PubMed 9005976). Our summary of all three trials is in sermorelin benefits. Neither peptide has strong evidence in healthy adults.
Where FDA stands on ipamorelin
FDA's Category 2 entry says compounded ipamorelin acetate "may pose risk for immunogenicity for certain routes of administration due to the potential for aggregation or peptide-related impurities," and notes "a study published in literature identified serious adverse events including death when ipamorelin was administered intravenously for improving gastric motility" (read 1 Nov 2026). FDA adds that it "lacks sufficient information to know whether the drug would cause harm" by other injectable routes.
Category 2 applies to 503B outsourcing facilities. For 503A pharmacies, the nomination was withdrawn and ipamorelin is not on the 503A bulks list or in the HHS appendix. A program selling it is outside the FDA and HHS frameworks, and we do not compare such programs. See research vs prescription peptides.
Cost and access
Sermorelin programs list monthly prices, and the cheapest today is Idun Rx at $94 a month (Sermorelin, 12 months, 12-month plan, listed per month (upfront billing not stated)). Compare them on the sermorelin price page and in the cost guide. We publish no ipamorelin price because we found no licensed program offering it. Sellers listing it often label it for research use, which we do not cover.
Which fits which reader
- You want a growth hormone peptide through a licensed clinician: sermorelin is the one with a compounding route today. Your prescriber decides the form and amount; we do not publish doses.
- You are weighing ipamorelin: expect no federal route and thin human data. Ask a clinician about FDA-approved options instead.
- You have active cancer, pituitary disease or are pregnant: raise it with a prescriber first. See sermorelin side effects.
FAQ
Sermorelin vs ipamorelin: which is better?
Neither is proven better. Sermorelin can be compounded on a prescription and has small adult trials. Ipamorelin has no federal compounding route and one failed phase 2 trial for a different use. No head-to-head human trial exists, so claims that one is stronger are unsupported.
Is ipamorelin legal?
Ipamorelin is not FDA-approved. FDA lists it in Category 2 for 503B facilities, its 503A nomination was withdrawn, and it is not in the HHS policy appendix. Pharmacies selling it are outside the federal frameworks we found. Check the date on our tracker, since status can change.
Is ipamorelin the same as sermorelin?
No. Sermorelin copies part of growth hormone releasing hormone. Ipamorelin is a different molecule that acts on a ghrelin-type receptor. Both raise growth hormone, but they are different drugs with different legal footing and evidence.
Can you get ipamorelin from a telehealth program?
We track no licensed telehealth program that lists ipamorelin on its pricing page. Sites that sell it are usually research-labeled vendors, which this site does not cover. A licensed clinician can tell you whether any legal route exists in your state.
Does ipamorelin work better than sermorelin?
No human trial compares them. Ipamorelin's only outcome trial we found, in surgery patients, showed no significant benefit over placebo. Sermorelin's trials are small and partial. Anyone claiming a clear winner is relying on marketing rather than data.
Is sermorelin FDA-approved?
Not today. Its former brand, Geref, was withdrawn, and FDA found that was not for reasons of safety or effectiveness (Federal Register, March 2013). Pharmacies can still compound it on a prescription, but compounded sermorelin is not an FDA-approved product.
Bottom line
Sermorelin is the one of the two with a prescription route and tracked prices; ipamorelin is neither approved nor compoundable under any policy we found. To price sermorelin, use the cost page or see our best peptide programs.
